News and Updates

Attention Community Relations Managers and Corporate CIOs --- TFA-Houston Becomes Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher Do you need to do more with less? Are you looking for a higher ROI? TFA-Houston recently became a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR). What does this mean for you? TFA can assist you to redeploy your computers and other hardware being replaced into community based organizations serving the underserved. TFA can wipe your data, certify its destruction, and install a new licensed Microsoft operating system. Transferring OS licenses was cumbersome in the past. Now, as a MAR it is even easier for TFA to work with you to save your company money, create tax benefits and create goodwill in the community. For more information contact Dr. Douglas Caldwell at 713.961.0012 or go to http://www.techforall.org/pressreleases/031203.html

TFA-Houston to Host Second SimHouston Training --- On Thursday, March 27, TFA-Houston will host the second in a series of training events for community technology center (CTC) leaders interested in deploying the City of Houston's new SimHouston program at their CTC. Nineteen CTC leaders have already been trained for implementation of this new service from the City. Almost three hundred installed computers in publicly accessible facilities are represented by the CTC leaders already trained. These facilities serve approximately 3,500 persons per week. For more information call Pam Gardner, TFA-Houston Program Manager, at 713.961.0012 or go to.... http://houston.techforall.org/feature.html or http://www.simhouston.com .

ESL Classes Begin at Milby CTC --- In addition to the existing Recycling/Distribution operation at Misión Milby (2220 Broadway) in Houston's East End, TFA-Houston has also developed a community technology initiative there. Only 18% of the adults in the community have a high school diploma. Many adults have limited English speaking skills. Recognizing these issues, TFA and the LULAC National Education Service Center (LNESC) developed a relationship with Houston Community College to provide ESL classes at the Milby CTC. LNESC provides a classroom and the students in the class use TFA computers to practice their language and speaking skills. This partnership between a public institution, a corporation, and the community will use the tools of technology to make their whole community a better place to live. TFA is proud to have been an active participant in both bringing the community together as well as making this large computer Grant. A total of 140 computers will be distributed to Houston community based organizations in the April 2003 distribution.
